Northeast locks up postseason spot with 1-point win

Herald Staff Report

GOOSE LAKE — The Northeast football team improved its record to 6-2 in Friday night’s hard-fought 13-12 win over Starmont. Both team’s entered play with a 4-1 record in the Iowa Class 1A District 4 conference, where a win would guarantee them at least second place in the standings on the year.

All the scoring was done in the first half of this game, making it a close game all night long. After Starmont’s Brady Janssen grabbed a 24 yard pass, Northeast’s running back Tanner Loots was able to run for a touchdown with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter and evened up the game. Mitchell Bielenberg scored what would become the winning touchdown for Northeast, and Tanner Voss made the kick for the extra point.

“This was a big game for both teams going in. The winner of tonight’s game locked up 2nd place for sure. ... This win gives us a home game for the substate game,” said Northeast head coach Jeremy Mosier.
