Unity drops season finale in soccer

FULTON, Ill. — Cono Christian scored a pair of late goals Saturday to defeat Fulton Unity Christian 3-1 in high school soccer.

“The team we lost to beat us 6-0 earlier in year,” Unity coach Tim Wessels said. “We gave up the last two goals in the final 10 minutes. The guys really played hard.”

Ryan Medenblik had evened the score at 1-1 for Unity, scoring his team-leading 29th goal of the season.

“He basically did a run through their defense from about midfield, went through three defenders, got a good shot from the left side and put it past the goalie,” Wessels said.

The Knights finished the season with a 9-9 record.

“That’s very satisfactory,” Wessels said. “We wound up getting second at our conference tournament the week before.”

Wessels said there were several highlights for the season besides Medenblik’s 29 goals.

“Our goalie, Josh Warren, came up big for us a lot,” he said. “Our defensive guys on the back end, Brian Meinsma, Kyle Davis and my son, Jared Wessels, all did a good job. Between Josh in goal and those three, they kept us in a lot of games and gave us chance to win some.”
