Tipton adds to Indians' woes

By Bill Isaacson
For the Herald

CAMANCHE — Something was going to give on a cold, windy night to end the regular season. Both the Tipton Tigers and Camanche Indians came into the game 0-8 on the season and looking to end the high school football season on a high note.

At the end, it was Tipton with the building blocks for next season. Quarterback Jack Shipley ran for 302 yards and five touchdowns in the Tigers’ 38-9 win Friday night.

Camanche looked good early as it took the opening possession and marched 64 yards on 12 plays to get on the board with a Moritz Mueller field goal from 24 yards.

Mueller, normally the starting quarterback for the Indians, was relegated to kicking duty only because of a torn meniscus suffered against Solon.

It didn’t take Tipton long to respond. Brody Phelps returned the kickoff all the way to the Camanche 30-yard line, and the Tigers took only two plays for Shipley to run in from 28 yards out for his first score.

Ironically, the longest drive of the night for Tipton was the one they didn’t get any points from as they turned the ball over on downs next time they had the ball after a 13-play drive that stalled on the Camanche 24.

Camanche fumbled the ball away the next time with the ball near midfield. The Tigers took advantage, covering 53 yards on only three plays when Shipley went in from 7 yards out to make it 12-3.

Camanche turned the ball over on downs again, and this time Tipton covered 65 yards on only four plays. Shipley scored from 17 yards to make it a 19-3 Tigers lead at the break.

Tipton saved its quickest strike for the start of the third quarter.

Shipley, running most of the night out of the pistol formation, went around the right end and raced 94 yards down the sideline on a one-play drive that took all of 20 seconds.

Camanche could not get the holes up front that it needed throughout the night and punted the ball away on the first possession of the second half. That’s when Tipton put the game away.

The quick-strike Tigers offense went 83 yards on four plays. This time, Phelps scored from 68 yards out to put Tipton up 32-3 still in the third quarter.

Camanche was then able to put a drive together a drive in quick fashion, as well, going 41 yards on four plays with Mike Sullens scoring from 21 yards out around the left end to get the Indians on the board. But it was too late.

Shipley capped his incredible performance with a 32-yard run that put him over 300 yards for the game and gave Tipton the lead that ended up being the final score.

The six touchdown drives tallied by Tipton took an average of three plays and only used an average of 1:09 of clock.

Camanche won the junior varsity game 32-18.
