Preston finishes regular season unbeaten

By Cory Dann
For the Herald

MILES — Big plays all around was the name of the game for the Preston Trojans as they defeated the East Central Raiders 70-12 in Iowa Eight Player District 4 action in Miles.

The Trojans (9-0) won an outright district championship and finished an unbeaten regular season.

Preston took the ball to open the game and wasted little time scoring. They marched 38 yards on just four plays, capped off by a Luke Assenmacher 6-yard run to take the 7-0 lead. After a quick three-and-out for the Raiders offense, Preston’s Kyle Feller punched it in from 3 yards out as the lead grew to 14-0.

Feller had 75 yards rushing in limited action.

Once again the Trojans got the ball back quickly on a fumble by the Raiders on the kickoff return. Quarterback Jason Feddersen took the keeper and rumbled 20 yards for the third touchdown of the night with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Feddersen ran for a team-best 100 yards.

The Preston defense got into the act as well.

East Central fumbled again, but this time in the end zone, and the Trojans were able to grab two more points on the safety. Kyle Feller took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown for the last score of the quarter. The Trojans led 29-0.

“We really stressed it all week that we want to peak as a team and play as a team now that we’re heading into the playoffs. The boys when they got into the first half they were able to execute well in all phases of the game, and they did a good job”, said Preston coach Kevin Behr.

Preston’s lead stretched to 56-0 at halftime.

East Central was able to match the Trojans in the second half as both teams tallied two scores apiece. Nate Wall had the big game for the Raiders, scoring runs of 33 and 10 yards to go along with a game-high 172 yards rushing.

“Nate Wall is a great runner for us, and the kids fought to the end and they never gave up, so we were happy to get those two touchdowns at the end, and overall I was happy that our kids never gave up”, said Raiders head coach Dave Jenkins

East Central finished the season with an 0-9 record.

Preston opens playoff action Wednesday night at home at 7 against Clarksville.

“I applaud the kid’s efforts, and they got us to 9-0 and district champs, but it all starts over now,” Behr said. “Sunday is practice, and we all start 0-0. We’re hoping to get five games in, but just like this season, we got to attack these games one at a time, so right now it’s just Wednesday’s game.”
