Cross country roundup: Griffin wins district, returns to state
Griffin leads Irish to state
Herald Staff Report
WAPELLO — Audrey Griffin is headed back to the Iowa cross country state meet. And the rest of her Prince of Peace teammates are going along with her.
Griffin won the Class 1A regional title Monday at Indian Hills Golf Course, and the Irish advanced to Saturday’s meet in Fort Dodge after finishing third in a close four-team battle for team honors.
“It was a good district, and we had good efforts from all our girls,” Prince of Peace coach Dave Lawrence said.
Griffin won the race in 16 minutes, 28 seconds, considered a slower time than normal by Lawrence, who said the course was longer than 4,000 meter. Sarah Lampe of Bellevue Marquette finished second, 20 seconds behind Griffin, and led the Mohawks to the team title.
Marquette finished with 56 points, with North Linn edging Prince of Peace 75-78 for second place, and Lone Tree taking fourth with 90. Preston finished in fifth place.
Katie Isenhour of Prince of Peace finished in ninth place in 17:30 and would have placed individually had the Irish not qualified.
Chrissy Kokjohn followed in 12th place (17:40), Anna Yackshaw was 22nd (18:43), Taylor Determan was 41st (18:43) and Jill Crigger was 56th in 21:01.
“We needed all our girls to do well because the top four were close,” Lawrence said.
Led by a 26th-place finish, the Prince of Peace boys placed eighth in the team race with 169 points. Iowa Mennonite School (44) was the champion, followed by Wapello (94) and Lone Tree (106). Marquette was fourth with 132.
Konner Lemke was 33rd for the Irish in 19:12, followed by Joe Schnier (34th, 19:16), Eric Sikkema (36th, 19:18), Isaac Jankowski (40th, 19:29), Jacob Lehmkuhl (42nd, 19:31) and Kevin Schnier (57th, 20:37).
“We were expecting a little bit better,” Lawrence said. “It was a fairly strong district, so I thought our boys did pretty well. Our overall effort was pretty good.”
Bill Spencer of Iowa Mennonite School was the boys winner in 16:46.
