CLINTON — The Black Hawk College Braves from Moline, Ill., and the Clinton Community College Cougars opened the 2009-2010 basketball season Monday night at Ashford University because of the Clinton High School home football game.
The Black Hawk team came back strong after falling behind early and won 80-48. The Cougars had a 15-11 lead after the first six minutes.
The Braves answered back with a 17-5 run to go on top 28-20 with 5:25 left in the first half and then increased the lead to 12 points, 36-24, during the intermission.
Both teams were able to do what they like early in the season as they were able to get all players into the game.
The Braves came out strong in the second half with a 22-4 run that put them on top by 30 points, 58-28, with 12:43 showing on the clock.
The Cougars tried to come back a couple of times and cut the margin to 30 points, 73-43, with just over three minutes left, but the Braves kept adding to the margin and went on to win 80-48.
“It was a tough game, and I was very disappointed as I think we didn’t play to our potential, but I’m not sure that they are 32 points better than us. I think our guys are really going to be very competitive. I thought the starting unit did a good job overall, and I think we will be making a few changes,” Clinton Community College coach Marcus Harris said.
Clinton’s next home contest is Thursday at Clinton High’s W. J. Yourd Gymnasium when it plays host to Carl Sandburg with a 7 p.m. starting time.
