Prophetstown girls advance to title game

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Clare Kramer led four Prophetstown players into double-digit scoring as the Prophets defeated Orion 63-40 on Friday night to advance to today’s championship game at the Lady Prophets Basketball Tournament.

The Prophets (15-2) will face LaSalle-Peru in tonight’s 7:30 championship game.

Kramer led Prophetstown’s balanced attack with 14 points, followed by Karlie Stafford with 13, Corrie Reiley scored 12 and Heather Strike with 11.

Strike tossed two 3-pointers in the opening quarter as the Prophets built a 15-12 lead. Kramer then matched the Chargers with a six-point second quarter, and her teammates added eight more to push the advantage to 29-18. The Prophets outscored the Chargers by six points in each of the final two quarters to stretch the final margin to 23.

Orion’s Baillie McCunn led all scorers with 15 points.

The rest of today’s schedule has West Carroll facing Hall Township for seventh place at 3 p.m., Hinckley-Big Rock meeting Rockford Christian at 4:30 p.m. for fifth place and Orion squaring off with Riverdale for third place at 6 p.m.

In other games Friday:

• LaSalle-Peru 44, Hinckley-Big Rock 35: Jena Argubright scored six of her nine points in the second quarter, when LaSalle-Peru built a 23-18 lead. Hannah Wolfe led the winners with 12 points, while Lauren Paver scored 10 for Hinckley-Big Rock.

• Riverdale 53, Hall Township 42: Megan Groves and Sydney Mericle did much of their damage in the first half, then Lauren Claus took over for Riverdale in the second half. Groves made 7 of 8 free-throw attempts in the first half and scored nine points, while Mericle hit a pair of 3-pointers and had eight points as the Rams built a 27-18 halftime edge. Each of them finished with 13 points, while Claus led the way with 15, all after intermission. Ellie Herrmann led Hall with 11 points.

• Rockford Christian defeated West Carroll 49-19.
