Steamers start slow, Mustangs have strong first quarter

ERIE, ILL. — The Steamers had a strong first half start, but came out scoring seven points, respectively, which allowed Wethersfield to pull away far enough to beat Fulton 49-42. Fulton did attempt to make a slight comeback in the fourth quarter scoring 14 points.

Wethersfield dominated from the free throw line making 15 free shots while Fulton was 5-for-9 from the line.

Jordan Price led the Steamers with 12 points.

• MORRISON 49, STOCKTON 28

Morrison outscored Stockton 16-2 leading to a double-digit win opening their post-Christmas schedule with the 49-28 win over Stockton. Lakin Goodman had 10 field goals leading to 22 points while Ashley Greul followed with 10 points.

The second quarter became more defensive with Stockton outscoring Morrison 7-5. Morrison got warmed back up in the third quarter scoring 17 points.

Free throws came at a premium with Morrison going 2-for-3 while Stockton shot 3-for-4.

Kaitlyn Reusch led Stockton with nine points.

• ERIE 52, GALVA 34

Rachel Cobert turned in a double-double performance for the Cardinals in a 52-34 win over Galva. Cobert brought in 10 of the team’s 42 rebounds.

Erie’s big quarter came in the second where they scored 18 while holding Galva to just four points. The Cardinals didn’t have the lead before having the offensive explosion, trailing 8-7 after the first quarter.

Courtney Cobert had a near double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds, and was also one of three who had two assists.

Galva had both of its leading scorers have eight points — Curran O’Riley and Samantha DeSmit.

• KNOXVILLE 60, MERCER COUNTY 22

Knoxville had three players scoring in double-digits — Kelly Lenz had 18, Megan Axcell with 15 and Morgan Rupert scored 10. Knoxville also forced a shutout on Mercer County in the fourth quarter.

• RIDGEWOOD 68, MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE 62, OT

Ridgewood scored 27 in the final quarter of regulation and overtime to survive in the opening day of the Cardinal Classic.

Destiny Smith was the game’s leading scorer for Monmouth-Roseville with 18 points.
