ERIE, Ill. — The Cobert sisters scored a combined 31 points to lead Erie to a 63-46 win against Kewanee Wethersfield in their first game Friday at the Warkins Cardinal Classic girls basketball tournament. The Cardinals also defeated Mercer County 35-24.
Rachel Cobert scored 16 against Wethersfield, while Courtney Cobert scored 15 points. Lexi Floming also scored in double digits for the Cardinals with 14 points.
Erie had a good first game at the free-throw line making 14 of 17 attempts.
Erie did have a little difficulty on defense as McKenzie Hoogerwerf scored exactly half of Wethersfield's points with 23. She made six 3-pointers and three of the team's five made free throws.
After having an offensive splurge to begin Friday's action, Erie's second game a 180-degree turnaround playing Mercer County.
The score at the end of the first quarter of the Wethersfield game was 23-13. It was 4-0 against Mercer County through the first eight minutes.
Mercer County did end up scoring 11 points in the second quarter while forcing just nine to Erie.
The third quarter turned back to defense as the Golden Eagles managed to score three in the third to Erie's 13.
Rachel Cobert led the Cardinals with nine points. Emily Cox had seven points.
ERIE, Ill. — The Fulton Steamers opened Day 2 of the Warkins Cardinal Classic on a good note, defeating Galva 37-26 despite scoring in single figures in each of the first three quarters.
Fulton played a solid fourth quarter, scoring its most points by quarter with 14 while holding Galva to just six in the final period.
Betsy Leonard led the Steamers with 15 points. Averi Leitzen hit two 3-pointers in the win, while Galva's leading scorer was Curran O'Riley with 10 points. Sarah Jeffries scored eight points for Galva.
Fulton could not handle Knoxville's trio of Morgan Rupert, Megan Axcell and Kelly Lenz as the three combined to score 40 in a 65-32 victory in Fulton's second game of the day.
