Six Panthers, 5 Mustangs advance

ERIE, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown placed third and qualified six individuals for the district meet, while Morrison placed fourth and had five wrestlers advance Saturday at the Illinois Class 1A Erie Regional tournament.

Jared Cole (145 pounds) and Nick Williams (170) won titles for the host Panthers. Erie/Prophetstown had four other finalists who also advanced to this weekend’s Byron Sectional. Josh Bowling (126), Grady Todd (132), Josh Wheeler (138) and Dylan Binon (152) were runners-up.

Morrison also won a pair of titles. Joe Eads won at 106 and Austin Keller won at 160. Taking second for the Mustangs were Cody Vanderlaan at 113 and Austin Shoup at 182, while Tyler Todd was third at 285.

Fulton also had one wrestler advance to the sectional meet. Cole Grant took third at 126 pounds.

Steven Balk advanced to the semifinals at 285 for the Steamers, where he was pinned by second-ranked Ben Corlett of Sherrard. Balk, Zack Jenkins (195), Sam Grant (145), Aaron Fields (132) and Jake Hoffman (120) each went 1-2 for the Steamers. Brandon Kaecker (106), Adam Hodge (138), Alex Martin (152), Mike Pidde (160) and Keegan Rockwell (170) each was 0-2.

The top three finishers at each weight class qualified for the Byron Sectional.

Thunder advance 4

POLO, Ill. – Paawan Dandona and Jeff Casey won individual titles Saturday to lead West Carroll to a fifth-place finish at the Illinois Class 1A Polo Regional wrestling tournament.

Dandona was the champion at 113 pounds and Casey won the title at 126. Two other Thunder wrestlers, Andrew VanKampen and Brandon Anderson, also advanced to this weekend’s Byron Sectional meet that serves as the state qualifier.

VanKampen took second at 106, while Anderson was third at 285.

Lena-Winslow won the team title with 241.5 points. The Panthers won six weight classes and had district qualifiers at six others.
