Deshond Robinson led Clinton High School on Friday as the River Kings opened the outdoor track and field season by winning six events at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Pleasant Valley High School.
Clinton finished fifth in the eight-team event that is scored to 24th place (24 points for an individual first-place finish, 23 for second, etc.; a win in a relay was worth 36). Pleasant Valley won with 831 points, followed by Dubuque Senior (733), Dubuque Hempstead (680.5), Muscatine (641.5), Clinton (616), Central DeWitt (494.5), North Scott (397.5) and Rock Island, Ill. (43).
“Normally we’re known for our depth,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said. “Depth is big here.”
Clinton showed its strength and depth in the sprints.
Robinson won all three sprint races, taking the 100 meters in 11.12 seconds, the 200 in 22.29 and the 400 in 50.11. Freshmen Barrion Collins (11.5) and Quavon Jones (11.6) took fourth and fifth in the 100, Marquis Robinson (23.34) was third in the 200 and Jones (53.03) placed third in the 400.
“Deshond’s times were good; the 100 and 400 were back to back,” Smith said. “He’s looking a lot stronger and is very motivated.”
Robinson also anchored Clinton’s victorious 1,600-meter relay unit, following Marquis Robinson, Eric Maddasion and Delante Chamberlain for a winning time of 3:29.96.
Clinton’s other wins came in field events.
Brady Ernst took first in the high jump at 6 feet, while Nate Harden won the shot put with a toss of 49-5. He also placed third in the discus (140-8.5).
Dustin Caldwell, Maddasion and Alex Caldwell helped the Kings to third-place finishes in the 400 and 800 relays. Collins anchored the 400, which ran a 45.89, while Marquis Robinson anchored the 800 (1:35.93).
“We’ve got a lot of young kids,” Smith said. “Some young kids stepped up and ran well.”
Chamberlain added a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.44) and a sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:00.58).
Jake Kagemann led Central DeWitt with a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 58.62.
Kyle Marti placed fourth for the Sabers in the 3,200 (10:10) and was fifth in the 800 (2:04.88).
Central DeWitt placed fourth in the 800 and 3,200 relays.
Rebels win title
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Northeast finished the indoor track and field season Thursday with a first-place finish at the UW-Platteville Invitational High School Meet.
The Rebels totaled 106 points, led by first-place finishes from Eli Kaczinski in the 3,200 (9:54.70); Nick Anderson in the 800 (2:10.88); Nick Kennicker, Kaczinski, Will Hasken and Anderson in the 3,200 relay (8:36.03); and Hasken, Ryan Murphy, Kennicker and Moehr in the 1,600 relay (3:48.20).
Easton Valley got a 1-2 finish from Logan Wilhelm (24.28) and Chase Zaruba (24.32) in the 200, and the River Hawks also won the 800 relay in 1:39.80.
In the girls portion, Northeast got wins from Tierra Hildebrandt in the 55 (7.76), Aleenah Marcucci in the 200 (27.47) and 55 hurdles (9.33), Hannah Kilburg in the 1,600 (5:40.37) and Maddie Kaczinski in the 3,200 (13:29.01), along with a first in the 800 relay (1:52.82).
