Girls basketball: Oberman named Herald Player of Year

CLINTON — Addie Oberman scored just 50 points her freshman year at Northeast. Now, she has blossomed into an All-State player and even found a spot on a collegiate roster.

Oberman is thankful for all the accolades she’s received the past couple of seasons and for everyone who has been there for the whole trek.

When Oberman found out she was receiving the Herald All-Area Player of the Year, all she could say was “wow.”

“I’m so thankful that everything is paying off, and I know I’ve been working for this all along,” Oberman said.

This season, Oberman scored just under 18 points a game, which is actually under her 2012-13 average of nearly 20 points a game.

“She’s an offensive player,” Rebels coach Chas Jargo said. “She didn’t have as good of a year from (the) 3-point area as she would have liked, but she certainly came through in other areas.”

Jargo also pointed out what her offensive strengths were.

“She has a really good jump shot,” he said. “She is really best when she slashes to the basket and gets to the free-throw line, and she’s a 70 percent free-throw shooter.”

Oberman, meanwhile, knew she had to be successful for the Rebels to be good, but she also realized what kind of talent the Rebels had around her.

“We came out firing as a team,” she said. “I knew we were going to have to do that in order to be good. I knew our team had potential, and we did what we could.”

The Rebels lost in second-round play to Camanche on a buzzer-beater, and finished the season with 17 wins. None of those 17 wins stood out in Oberman’s mind, but who she won those games with did.

“It was so much fun playing with these girls,” Oberman said. “It was such a blessing to play with great friends, and the highlight of my season was definitely the moments we made together.”

Oberman also enjoyed the company of Jargo and the Northeast coaching staff.

“I enjoyed playing for him the last three years,” Oberman said. “It was a great experience, and he was a good coach.”

Oberman’s playing days aren’t quite done yet.

She was one of 20 girls who participated in Wednesday night’s Eastern Iowa All-Star Game. Oberman played with a pulled quadriceps and was a little under the weather, but she scored seven points as her South team won 58-57 in Cedar Rapids.

The game took place on Kirkwood’s campus, and Oberman will call Kirkwood and Cedar Rapids her home for the next two seasons. The announcement was made official earlier this week.

“I felt like it was home for me,” Oberman said. “I wanted to play somewhere, and I like the coaching staff a lot, so it felt like a great fit.”
