Sachsenmier sweeps wheelchair events

DES MOINES — When Drake Sachsenmier started competing in wheelchair events, he had just an ordinary chair and a dream. Over the years, the chair has improved and so has he, but the dream never wavered.

Saturday, the Camanche senior lived it out, winning all four events at the Iowa track and field state meet at the seemingly aptly named Drake Stadium.

"It means a lot," Sachsenmeier said. "It means means a lot to my mom and my family. I've been battling for three years to win and I'm finally taking advantage of it."

Sachsenmier started the day by winning the shot put with a throw of 18 feet, 7.25 inches. Moving to the blue oval track, he won the 100 meters in 19.14 seconds, the 200 in 36.33 and the 400 in 1:09.05. The winning margin was more than 2 seconds in each event.

"My favorite events are the track because it gets a lot out of me," he said. "The one and the two (are favorites) basically because it's one turn, but I can't vote out the four, because the four is the big boy.

"But I have to thank my shot put coach, coach (Chris) Turner. He's pushed me for three years, and it's finally all paying off right here."

Sachsenmier thanked others, too, especially those who helped purchase a high-tech chair to use in competition.

"The community, my friends and my family, we all pitched in some money and got it to where it is right now, and I'm doing a favor for them and I'm going to win state for them," he said.

Now, that he has accomplished his goal, he urges the other wheelchair athletes to aim for their dreams, too.

"Go out and have fun and run hard," he said. "That's what state's all about: you've just got to have fun."

The smile on his face Saturday proved he took his own advice.
