Clinton baseball team beats Camanche

CLINTON — Two wins in a row is something that Clinton coach Kevin Cunningham can feel satisfaction in heading into the weekend.

“I think we’re starting to get a little better,” Cunningham said. “First time this season we’ve gotten two wins in a row.”

Clinton defeated Camanche 3-1 on Friday night, thanks to two runs in the fifth inning that broke a 1-1 tie.

Murray Henricks hit a two-run single (that he tried to stretch into a double) that brought in Dustin Caldwell and Evan Jackson.

Camanche lit the scoreboard first on an RBI double by right fielder Kyler Campie that scored senior Seth Boysen.

“He’s been hitting the ball hard,” Camanche coach Darryl Cochran said of Campie. “He has come along really well, and he has responded well to what we’ve asked of him.”

Campie was 1-for-3 on the night.

“I was really happy with how we played,” Cochran said. “The upper part of our lineup got on base, while our middle portion failed to get some bunts over.”

Levi Carber was the pitcher for Camanche — throwing all six innings, allowing three runs (two were earned) while striking out five and walking three.

“Levi spotted his pitches well,” Cochran said. “He threw strikes and did a great job for us.”

Cunningham also credited Carber for his craftiness.

“He kept our hitters off-balance,” he said. “He threw a very good game, but we were able to adjust and get some runs across.”

Meanwhile, Alex Dodd also threw six innings for the River Kings. Dodd, who threw Wednesday night in the win against Cedar Rapids Prairie, had seven strikeouts that included striking out the side in the fourth inning on 14 pitches. Dodd also had two walks.

Austin Peters came in to close the game and took the save by forcing Carber to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

With the back-to-back wins, Cunningham feels the energy coming back to life in this team.

“I really liked the support our dugout brought tonight, and I think that was carried out onto the field,” Cunningham said.
