Wrestlers host huge tournament

Herald Staff Report

CLINTON — Clinton High School will have 23 wrestling teams from three states descend upon it this morning for the 39th Bob Lueders’ Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

“That one is really a sentimental one for us with it being a family thing,” Clinton senior Nick Hatheway said. “We’re going to go out there and wrestle as tough as we can. We want to put on a show one more time in our home gym.”

The tournament is named after the father of current Clinton wrestling coach J.D. Lueders, who was a longtime successful Clinton wrestling coach in his own right.

“That’s a day to really fight,” Clinton junior Hunter Genco said. “It’s all about our heart. We want to do it for our coach. We also do it for ourselves. We know one man is watching above us, just waiting for our best performance and for us to battle.”

At 120 pounds, Genco is at one of six weights that boast five or more ranked wrestlers.

“Winning the title would be such a great thing for the team and my personal experience,” Genco said. “As long as I go out there and battle as hard as I can and leave my heart out there, there’s nothing more I could ask for from myself.”

Action gets under way at 9 a.m. today, beginning with preliminary round matches.
