Genco nabs top honors at Jefferson

CEDAR RAPIDS — Clinton claimed third place Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Invitational wrestling tournament.

“Overall, I felt we had a pretty good showing, placing third in a highly competitive tournament,” Clinton coach J.D. Lueders said. “Although we left a few wins out on the mat I felt like our kids battled all day long. I was proud of their efforts.”

Hunter Genco was Clinton’s lone champion, beating Fort Madison’s fourth-rated Bryce Meyer 1-0 for the title at 126 pounds. It was his third title this season, and Genco was voted the most outstanding wrestler for his efforts.

“Hunter wrestled flawlessly in the finals, having to ride out Meyer for the win in the third period,” Lueders said. “He was tough as nails. Just a great effort with no mistakes.”

Three other River Kings also reached the finals.

Alburnett’s Bryce Paul beat Alex Caldwell 8-3 at 145 pounds, Kelly May of Cedar Rapids Jefferson pinned Dustin Caldwell in 5:41 at 152 and Mason Wisse of Oskaloosa pinned Dillion Chase in 4:54 in the final at 182.

“Justin Guilliams (195) and Tyler Clark (285) battled back from tough semifinal losses to claim third-place medals. Curt Ilg lost a controversial quarterfinals match and came back to go 4-1 on the day for fifth place (at 138). Evan Gerdes (220) and Riley Chapman (132) finished off our scoring with sixth-place finishes.

We are proud of these kids. They will battle, and that’s all we ask. I know they are excited about the upcoming week. We should see some good wrestling.”

The highlight of the week is the annual Bob Lueders Invitational on Saturday at Yourd Gymnasium.
