Easton Valley boys roll over Irish

CLINTON — It was one of those nights where one team was visibly better than the other.

Easton Valley (12-2) toppled Prince of Peace (7-8) 70-32 in Central Catholic Auditorium thanks to multiple chances of fast breaks, second-chance points around the rim and out-competing the Irish.

"They were just better than we were tonight," Irish coach Gerry Murphy said. "We weren't ready to play tonight; we had a lot of things going on, including homecoming."

Irish senior Nic Roth may have been crowned the homecoming king, but the king of the court Friday night was Easton Valley guard Chase Zaruba, who entered into the game scoring 23.4 points a game. Zaruba scored 26 for the River Hawks.

"It's all about the team, really," Zaruba said. "I can't do anything without my teammates, and I love playing with these guys."

Easton Valley had 48 points at halftime, including 18 from Zaruba, while Logan Wilhelm, Easton Valley's big man, had 10 at the intermission. Jarod Lee scored nine points in the two 24-point quarters for the River Hawks.

Dan Beck, head coach for the River Hawks, has been impressed with Zaruba's zealous streak of scoring.

"He's been on a tear," Beck said. "We knew he was capable of this talent-wise, obviously, but we've never had anyone else step up like he has this year; we have had other guys who have stepped up, however.

"I thought that was one of our best efforts," Beck said. "I was concerned with how these guys would react to playing in a gym like this one, but they responded really well and took care of business."

Wilhelm has also been a key factor for the River Hawks as the center, and Friday was no different.

Wilhelm set the tone early by scoring 10 of his 14 in the first half and created some havoc when the Irish tried to shoot over the 6-foot, 8-inch senior.

"I don't think we went to him enough tonight," Beck said. "He did a better job finishing his shots inside, and he was big for us defensively like he has been all season."

Beck believes the team's depth is the reason why the River Hawks have been able to play at a high level every game.

"Our second five is pretty decent, too," Beck said. "I think the reason why we're where we are is because we get pushed hard in practice every day. That's very important."

For the Irish, Roth and Seth Moeller each scored seven points on a night to forget for Prince of Peace.
