Thunder eke out a victory

FULTON, Ill. — West Carroll pulled out a 57-56 last-second win against Riverdale on Saturday in the second game of the Eric Ottens Shootout boys basketball event on Stan Borgman Court.

Trevor Jones led the Thunder with 20 points. Brandon Sturtevant buried a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored eight of his 10 points in the quarter.

The two teams waged a close battle all day. West Carroll led 28-27 at halftime and the teams were tied at 44 after three quarters.

Jake Bussert led Riverdale with 18 points, getting all of them in the first three quarters. Andrew Goodwin, like Bussert a sophomore, also scored all 13 of his points in the first three quarters. A third sophomore, Chris Kosminsky, kept the Rams in the game with three 3-pointers in the final period.

Prophets top Orion

FULTON, Ill. – Seth Cady keyed Prophetstown’s strong third quarter, and the Prophets defeated Orion 48-42 in the first game at the Eric Ottens Shootout.

Orion led 20-18 at halftime, but Cady led a third-quarter surge that saw the Prophets outscore the Chargers 18-9.

Cady opened the second half with a 3-point basket and added two more in an 11-point third quarter. He finished the game with 19 points. Ethan Howard added 11 for the Prophets.

Clay Vanderheiden led Orion with 11 points, scoring nine in the second half.
