Kings grab 2 16ths, 2 19ths at state swim meet

MARSHALLTOWN —  Clinton swimmers earned two 16th-place finishes and two 19ths Saturday at the Iowa boys state meet.

Junior Josh Hill claimed 16th in the 200-yard freestyle, was 19th in the 100 butterfly and was part of the 200 freestyle relay unit that took 16th and part of the 400 freestyle relay team that placed 19th.

Iowa City West ended Muscatine’s reign as team champion by winning the crown with 205 points. Cedar Rapids Washington was second with 136, followed in the top five by West Des Moines Valley (124), Dubuque Hempstead (111) and Council Bluffs Lewis Central (101).

Mississippi Athletic Conference teams Bettendorf (70 points) and Pleasant Valley (54) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, while Muscatine (43) took 12th, Davenport Central (22) was 15th, Burlington (4) placed 21st and Davenport North (3) tied for 22nd.

Hill swam six-hundredths of a second off his seed time in both of his individual events. He had a 16th-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.47 and was 19th in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.86 seconds. RJ Hemmingsen of Lewis Central broke the state record in the latter race, winning by more than 3 seconds in 47.84 seconds. That broke Andrew VanMeter’s 2003 mark of 48.58.

Hill anchored Clinton’s 200 freestyle relay unit that beat its seed time by .22 seconds, finishing just three-hundredths of a second behind Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 1:30.21. Senior Trevor Kao opened with a 22.41-second time for the first split, followed by junior Koner Frandsen in 22.99, senior Nathan Harden in 22.31 and Hill in 22.30.

Iowa City West won the relay in 1:25.46, finishing .21 ahead of Valley.

The River Kings closed the meet by taking 19th in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.23, with Hill leading off, followed by Harden, Frandsen and Kao. Iowa City West won the race in 3:08.43.

Iowa City West swept the relays, as it also won the the 200 medley relay in 1:35.94, and the Trojans’ Mark McGlaughlin was an individual double winner in the 50 freestyle (20.67) and the 100 freestyle (45.00), both All-America status times.Teammate Aidan Keen won the 200 freestyle in 1:40.91 and the 500 freestyle in 4:37.58.

Muscatine’s Alex Walton was a double winner, beating Justin Winnert of Johnston by .15 in the 200 individual medley (1:53.47), with Nick Staver of Pleasant Valley finishing fourth and Luke Eure of Davenport Central fifth. Walton also won the 100 backstroke in 50.59, while Eure was third.

Winnert won the 100 breaststroke in an All-America time of 56.38. MAC swimmers took the next three spots: Staver (57.30), Tanner Nelson of Bettendorf (58.04) and Michael Sowers of Muscatine (58.81).
