Fast start sends Bettendorf girls past Clinton

CLINTON — Bettendorf won by 44 points the first time it faced Clinton this season, but the Bulldogs weren't taking the rematch lightly.

"We knew we've got to start well because they're going to be excited to be playing at home," Bettendorf's Ally Scott said. "We had to make our own advantage."

The Bulldogs couldn't have asked for a much better start Friday at W.J. Yourd Gymnasium, and Scott spearheaded the effort.

Scott, a 5-foot-10 junior forward/guard, scored eight of Bettendorf's first 14 points as the Bulldogs built a double-digit lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes and went on the defeat the River Queens 52-25 in Mississippi Athletic Conference action.

"I think we had the momentum at the very beginning," said Scott, who scored 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first half.

"They hit a bunch of 3s to start the game," Clinton coach Mike Halac said. "In girls basketball, if you can start with several 3-pointers it kind of knocks the wind out of their sails.

"Still, I thought we defended pretty well. That's a really good team."

The Bulldogs opened with a 3-point basket from Kaley Sortillo 38 seconds into the game and led the rest of the way. Clinton got within 3-2 on a driving layup by Erin Wenzel, but Bettendorf scored the next 11 points.

Ashton Glaus (13 points) scored on a drive for a 5-2 lead, then Scott took over.

She made it 8-2 on a 3-pointer from the left side with 6:15 left in the opening quarter, then dropped in another from the top of the key with 5:32 left. Her next trey, from the left wing with 4:45 left, put Bettendorf ahead 14-2.

The Bulldogs increased their edge to 20-6 by the end of the quarter, pushed it to 31-8 at the half and coasted after intermission. Elizabeth Finn (15 points) also scored in double digits for the Bulldogs (6-4, 5-2 MAC).

Elle Tubbs was Clinton's top scorer with eight points.

"Elle did a good job of driving," Halac said. "This was the first game she not only was a spot-up shooter but also was aggressive."

The River Queens (2-8, 1-6) have a quick turnaround as they play a makeup doubleheader today at Burlington. The girls varsity game starts at 1 p.m., followed by the boys.

"Our entire postgame, we said to forget tonight and talk about tomorrow," Halac said. "We're happy to get to play tomorrow. We want to get rid of the sour taste as quick as we can."
