Schnoor's buzzer-beater beats Rebels

CAMANCHE — As Camanche guard Libby Schnoor was walking back to the locker room, she had a surprised look on her face as her teammates trampled near her as if she had hit a walk-off home run.

Schnoor hit the game-winning shot as time expired to beat Northeast 36-34 on Friday in a River Valley Conference girls basketball game. However, the Indians did not have the lead with 1 minute remaining.

In the final minute, Northeast committed a backcourt violation. Camanche capitalized off that turnover and hit one of three 3-pointers by Lindsey Grams.

Following a timeout by Northeast coach Charles Jargo and the Rebels, they had it set up to take the final shot, or so he thought.

“I wish we would have went for one there, but I told the girls if they had an open shot to go ahead and take it,” Jargo said. “I want the girls to be confident in their shots.”

Addie Oberman has made several baskets in her career — and scored a game-high 15 points Friday — but the last shot she took did not fall through.

With around 11 seconds left, Oberman drove with her right hand down the center of the lane, took a spin move forcing her to go left, and shot one inside of 10 feet that danced around the rim before falling into the possession of the Indians.

“I was surprised that they didn’t go for the last shot, but 34 seconds is a long time to hold the ball,” Camanche coach Danny Vogel said. “They had a good look, but it didn’t fall in.”

The ball not falling in gave Camanche its shot to win.

Schnoor looked for someone to pass to, but with less than 3 seconds remaining, she had to put the ball up.

“She had nowhere else to go, and we were all telling her to shoot, and she just threw it up there and it went in,” Vogel said.

Jargo gave credit to where it’s due.

“Schnoor hit a really tough shot,” he said. “Give credit to her, she made it count.”

Schnoor led the Indians with 10 points, followed by Julia Moore with eight points.

Camanche had an 11-point lead at one point in the third quarter, but by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Northeast had reeled it to within three points.

“Unfortunately, we let them make a statement on their home floor tonight, and we fell behind a little bit,” Jargo said. “But, this was a fantastically played girls high school basketball game tonight. Very well played.”

Vogel said shutting down a team like Northeast is something the Indians could carry into their next games.

“The defense tonight was very solid,” he said. “The offense wasn’t clicking tonight for some reason, but holding Northeast to 34 points is a very nice job.”

Camanche, which is ranked 13th in the state in Iowa Class 3A, returns home tonight against Durant-Bennett before heading out on the road next week.
