Prophets win twice at own tournament

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Things started well for West Carroll on Thursday morning in the opening game of the Lady Prophets basketball tournament.

The Thunder won the opening tip and Ieshia Larson drilled a baseline jumper 12 seconds in to put West Carroll ahead of host Prophetstown.

Prophetstown (16-1) took over from there.

Cassie Reiley knocked down a jumper 13 seconds later to tie the score and start a 30-0 Prophets' run over the next 12:50. Prophetstown cruised to a 68-20 victory.

"Coach said it was important to come out strong," Reiley said. "We wanted to kind of give them no hope of coming back on us. We have a really big game tonight against Proviso East."

Prophetstown was victorious in that game, as well, winning 61-30.

The Prophets forced 18 turnovers during their long run, including nine consecutive West Carroll possessions.

During that stretch, Reiley scored all 11 of her points and the Prophets made six transition layups.

With a large lead and his team having to play two games in one day, Prophetstown coach Don Robinson went deep into his bench. Reiley and two other starters sat the entire second half.

"Mr. Robinson said we were letting everyone in to get some experience," Reiley said. "It was important for all of us to get some rest. It was good for us to get back out there and play well at the beginning to get back into the swing of things. We haven't played since we won the tournament at Polo against Byron, so it's been a while.

"We've been practicing, but you can't really duplicate the game-like experience."

Prophetstown's reserves took advantage of their playing time.

Mikayla Bolton scored a game-high 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, all in the second half. Cayla Crane scored six points, all in the fourth quarter.

Kaylee Vos scored eight points, six in the second half, to lead West Carroll.

It was Reiley's first game at home since going over 1,000 points for her career at the Polo Tournament.

"It was awesome," Reiley said. "All my friends that I've played AAU with have been getting their 1,000 points, so I was like, 'Well, I have to be getting pretty close.' Coach gives us our point totals at the end of each season. I looked at that from last year. My grandpa comes to every game, and he keeps a book of everyone's stats, so I called him and asked how many I had this year. ... It was pretty neat because that's a big milestone to reach. It's exciting."

In their second game of the day, the Prophets jumped to a 17-1 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the victory. Corrie Reiley led the way with 14 points, 12 in the first half. Cassie Reiley scored all 12 of her points in the first half, and Riley Walters scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half as Prophetstown led 40-13 at intermission.

West Carroll lost to Orion 59-38 in its second game of the day. Orion’s Cassidy Clark scored 33 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Chargers

Larson scored 18 to lead the Thunder, eight in the second quarter.

In other pool-play games:

n Orion beat Proviso East 49-21 behind 23 points from Clark. Clark scored 14 of those points in the second half.

n Riverdale beat Kirkland Hiawatha 57-17. Elle May scored 17 points for the Rams and Hannah Nimrick scored 16.

n Riverdale also topped Hinckley-Big Rock 53-38. Nimrick led the way with 19 points, 13 in the second half.

n Hinckley-Big Rock beat Spring Valley Hall 35-30 after the teams each scored only three points in the final quarter.

n Hall also fell to Hiawatha 40-32. Hiawatha scored 16 fourth-quarter points to pull away.
