Kings roll way to state

MUSCATINE — Tanner Heppner rolled a perfect game to start the day on a positive note, and he helped Clinton roll up the highest qualifying score in the state Tuesday as the River Kings earned a spot in the Iowa Class 2A boys bowling state tournament.

The River Kings had a 3,374-pin total to win the qualifying tournament at Plamor Lanes, and that score was 80 pins better than the next-best 2A team in the state, Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The River Kings had the best individual total (2,291), then added Baker-round scores of 253, 182, 259, 199 and 190. The 259 was the best score in the state in the Baker rounds, while the 253 ranked third.

Heppner had the second-best two-game series in the state, as well, following up his 300 with a 214 for a 514 total.

Clinton’s next three scorers finished within 10 pins of one another. Tyrin Freels had a 236-224—460, Evan Marr a 256-199—455 and Nick Heimbaugh a 236-214—450. Tyler Schutte rounded out the individual scoring with a 206-206—412, but Tim Dawson was just seven pins behind him.

Iowa City West was the boys runner-up with a 3,081-pin total, six pins better than Muscatine.

Muscatine won the girls portion of the qualifying tournament and turned in the best score in the state, a 3,294.

Clinton’s girls finished second with a 2,693 pin total, which left them just 37 pins short of earning an at-large berth to the state meet.

Alexis Halcomb led the River Queens with games of 173 and 233 for a 406 total. Hope White was next with a 184-162—346, followed by Cheyenne Brashaw (172-168—340), Lauren Pedersen (146-179—325) and Cassandra Giddings (179-122—301), with Carlie Mierley finishing just one pin behind Giddings.

Clinton scored a 975 in the Baker rounds with games of 178, 185, 184, 255 and 173.

The 2A state tournament is set for 10 a.m. next Tuesday at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.
