Strong second half leads Kings to 5-0 soccer win

CLINTON — The Northeast boys soccer team has some youth, but it hung around with Clinton for the first half. Then, the flood gates opened in the second half as the River Kings defeated the Rebels 5-0.

“We controlled the game from the outset, winning all the 50/50 balls, so I was pretty proud of the guys’ efforts tonight,” Clinton coach Matt Hagge said. “We took 37 shots, but I was getting a little nervous in the first half because we weren’t getting any goals.”

Meanwhile, Northeast coach John Keith was pleased with the Rebels’ defense. It was the first time all season that Northeast did not allow a goal in the first half.

“We pressed them, out-possessed them at times and looked to counter off of that at times,” Keith said. “I think that’s how we’re going to have to beat teams is off the counter. I think we just hung tough.

“I definitely have to be proud of the fact we held our opponent scoreless for the first time this season,” Keith added, speaking of the first half.

All five Clinton goals came in the second half, and the River Kings gave themselves many opportunities to score in the final 40 minutes. Clinton had 14 shots on goal while Northeast didn’t have a close opportunity to score until the final minute of the match.

The first goal came within three minutes of the second half when Danny Stewart led off the scoring with 37:09 left.

Action was pretty quiet for the next 20 minutes until Quinn Perry scored a goal from the left side of the pitch at the 17:26 mark of the second half, and Gaspar Lopez nearly had a goal but missed to the right 1:15 seconds later.

Robbie Thacker found the back of the net with 11:52 remaining, making the score 3-0. It was Thacker’s team-leading third goal of the season.

“I didn’t really expect to get the opportunity,” Thacker said. “It just came right to my foot, and I knew I had to take the shot. It was a good cross by Danny (Stewart).”

DJ Ludemann wanted to join the scoring party, so he scored a goal from just outside the goalie’s box 56 seconds later, putting the River Kings ahead by four goals. Then, 2:56 later, Patrick Newton finished out the scoring frenzy for Clinton by chipping a shot in for the fifth and final goal.

As Thacker mentioned, passing was a strength that Clinton used in its third win.

“I think we get goal-hungry, and I think everyone wanted to score because we were playing Northeast,” Thacker said.

Hagge said all passes that led to goals were crisp passes.

“We’ve been working on that all season,” he said. “This has been a possession game, and that was really encouraging.”

Clinton was coming off of an 8-0 loss to Bettendorf on Thursday night, and that match was a good measuring stick for the River Kings.

“We have some young guys on our team, and they were like deer in the headlights,” Hagge said. “Half of that game we played tough; that’s the top of the tier soccer, and we’re going to run into teams like that all season.”
