Girls basketball: Muskies top Queens

MUSCATINE — Even though Muscatine created some separation in the score, Clinton girls basketball coach Mike Halac wasn’t feeling too bad about the situation. Things changed a bit in the third quarter as the Muskies used a scoring spurt that propelled them to a 55-35 win against Clinton in the Mississippi Athletic Conference opener Friday night.

“At the half it was only a 10-point game, and the Queens were building confidence,” Halac said. “The fourth quarter was the downfall of the night for us as we struggled to score and our defense had some trouble.”

Emily Clemens (20 points) and Katie Shoultz (16) combined to outscore the River Queens, making 15 of their 28 shots from the field.

“I really think this is a game we could have won if we would have come out in the third quarter and played the same as we did the other three quarters,” Halac said. “Muscatine is a very talented team with top-notch coaching, but I’m looking forward to having another shot at them at home later in the season.”

McKenzie Petersen led Clinton with 11 points, and Erin Wenzel had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Clinton is back in action Tuesday at Bettendorf.

Quick start fuels Rebels

GOOSE LAKE — Northeast started on a 16-0 run, ensuring the Rebels would never trail in a 73-23 home win over West Liberty in girls basketball Friday night. Addie Oberman led all scorers with 17 points on five field goals and two 3-pointers, followed by Aleenah Marcucci’s 14.

Northeast coach Chas Jargo saw another well-rounded performance.

“It was a good start,” he said. “Our goal was to get out in front against a team like this and we did that. I thought tonight was a good opportunity for us to get everyone in. Everybody logged three quarters.”

Northeast turns right around with another home date this afternoon. The Rebels host Calamus-Wheatland at 5 p.m.

Regina tops Comets

BELLEVUE — After winning their first two games of the season, Bellevue dropped a close game to Iowa City Regina 48-44.

Ali Reeg and Carly Rubel each scored 18 points for Bellevue. Reeg made three 3-pointers in the first half and two more in the second half.

The Regals had two who scored in double-figures — Katie Wick with 18 points, shooting 7-for-13, and Jenna Lehman, who had 12 points on 50 percent shooting. Iowa City Regina shot 35 percent from the floor.
