Camanche boys, Northeast girls win track titles

TIPTON — Camanche and Northeast High Schools have a lot to show for their track and field performances Thursday and Friday. After the Tipton Class 2A district meet was “suspended” Thursday for rainy weather, both schools in both the boys and girls meets delivered.

For Camanche, boys coach Mark Metzger said his team is continuing its streak of excellence. After winning the Big East Conference meet earlier in the week, the Indians won the district title for the first time since the IHSAA went back to hosting district meets.

“Certainly we’re very excited about winning a district title,” Metzger said. “For the most part, it’s things we’ve done all year.”

Qualifiers for Camanche by virtue of victories were: Derek Harksen (400 meters), Mike Osaro (400 hurdles) and Cody Mensinger (800), as well as the 400, 1,600, 3,200 and  shuttle hurdle relay teams.

“We finished up the night with a great four-by-100 time,” Metzger said. “They ran their best time of the season.”

On the girls side, Northeast tied for first place in team points. The Rebels will send Danae Diedrich (100), Aleenah Marcucci (100 hurdles) and the 800- and 400-meter relay teams to Des Moines next week.

The Northeast boys finished in a tie for third. Coach Mike Mattis said he was “totally satisfied” with his athletes’ performances.

“Everything we thought we could get, we got,” Mattis said.

High jumper Bo Lingle placed first for Northeast with a 5-foor-10 leap in the rain Thursday. He was joined by distance runner Eli Kaczinski on Friday. Kaczinski won the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:34. Long jumper Kevin Boughton also qualified, winning with a leap of 21-3.

Finally, the Camanche girls witnessed another outstanding performance from senior Courtney Sowle. She won the high jump and 400-meter hurdles. But for coach Brenda Metzger, those wins weren’t even the highlight for Sowle, who also anchored the 1,600-meter relay.

On the second leg, Metzger said, Libby Schnoor came up limp from her start.

“She was hurting,” Metzger said.

The Indians were in sixth place by the time Schnoor handed the baton to Kylie Vogel for the third leg. Vogel gained ground, but Metzger said the team was still in fourth place by the time Sowle took off on the anchor leg.

“I knew when she grabbed the baton, she knew she was going to win,” Metzger said.

Sowle gained enough ground to win the race, something Metzger said was the highlight of the night. She also praised Sowle’s performance, stating it’s an appropriate sendoff for a senior that has devoted four years of hard work.

“I said to Courtney, ‘You did what I always knew you could do,’” Metzger said. “She has one more meet to go.”

Other Camanche girls qualifiers were the distance medley team and Schnoor in the 800-meter run.

Of his girls performances, Northeast coach Pat Healy said: “The kids ran real well.” He praised Alayna Marcucci’s performance in particular. The freshman edged Columbus’s Becca Davisson in the 100-meter hurdles to finish first and receive an automatic bid. “Our team is pretty young to start with. We have a pretty good history with track so it’s not like we’re rebuilding a program. We’re just reloading.”
