Boys basketball: Unity improves to 4-0

FULTON, Ill. — With four players in double figures, Unity Christian blew away Tri-State Christian 71-29 on Friday, improving to 4-0. It was a good way to end an early stepping stone for Knights coach Jack Roemer. Slated next for Unity are several stronger tests against public school opponents, starting today at the Eastland Shootout.

“Tonight, we just completely overpowered them,” Roemer said. “We have kids that can score, and our team is not that easy to defend. I thought we played good defense overall. We played as well as we could play in the situation we’re in.”

Starting today, “It’ll be our first test to really see how good we are.”

Nolan Willoughby finished with 16 points to lead the Knights, edging teammates Colby Dykstra and Eric Medenblik, each with 15. Shawn Hintz finished with 10. Unity leapt to a 27-5 lead in the first quarter and cruised to victory.

Now, the undefeated Knights turn to Annawan at the Cougar Shootout.

“I think it’ll be a good game. I know our kids will play hard and we’ll be in the game,” Roemer said.

River Hawks roll

The River Hawks raced to a 22-2 lead in the first quarter and increased the edge to 31-2 in the first minute of the second quarter.
