Girls basketball: Cardinals move to 3-1

WOODHULL, Ill. — Balanced scoring and tough defense keyed Erie to its third consecutive victory Friday night in girls basketball.

Sisters Courtney and Rachel Cobert each scored seven points, and they combined for 15 rebounds, in a 36-29 win against Rockridge at the Ridgewood tournament.

“Our defense was outstanding again, and our patience against the press and half-court trap was outstanding,” coach Brian Howell said. “Morgan Newton, Katlyn Weber, Emily Cox and Bryce McCormick gave us a huge spark off the bench.”

Newton finished with six points, while McCormick had five for the Cardinals (3-1).

“This was a big win early in the year against a very good Rockridge team,” said Howell, whose team faces conference foe Riverdale at 8 tonight in the tournament.
