CLINTON — A Prince of Peace Catholic School science teacher recently received a regional volunteer award.

Katharine Atkinson earned the 2015 Local Section Outreach Volunteer of the Year for the Illinois/Iowa section.

Atkinson teaches all of the high school science classes at Prince of Peace that include chemistry. She has been an active member for the local section of the American Chemistry Society, and regularly brings students with her to the section meetings and events.

In the past, Atkinson has received several grants from the section for projects that she has done with her students. Last year in honor of Earth Day, Atkinson and her students collected local creek water samples to analyze the phosphate and nitrate levels. Additionally, students regularly participate in the local section's Chemistry Olympiad.

This award is given to recognize the outreach efforts made by local section volunteers. Each local section has an opportunity to recognize one individual annually for demonstrating outreach volunteer service within the section.
