Visit the Lyons Branch of the Clinton Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. April 10 for a Celebrating Authors Event sponsored by United Way and the Clinton Public Library. Local authors Misty Evans, McKenzley Morris, Amy Manemann, Kristal Shaff, Dionne Witt, Francesca Hawley, Aria Michaels, and Deena Nehring will be in attendance, signing books and greeting the public. Love to read? Stop out and meet some local authors and pick up a new book!
Food for Fine$! The Clinton Public Library will host a Food for Fines event during National Library Week, April 12 to 18, to help patrons reduce their library fines in exchange for non-perishable food items. All food donations will go to one or more food pantries to benefit families in the Clinton area. For each donation, $1 will be credited toward a fine on a library user’s account, up to a maximum of $50 per person. No money will be exchanged; patrons will be given account credit at the time of the donation. The Food for Fines program excludes replacement fees for lost or damaged items and billed items.
Eligible food items include peanut butter (plastic jars only); canned fruits, vegetables, chicken, tuna, or other canned meats or seafood; canned or boxed soups; cereals, rice, pasta, dried beans; and boxed meals. Please note: No glass jars will be accepted, and no damaged, opened, repackaged or expired food items will be accepted. Soda and candy will not be accepted. Participants can drop off donations Monday through Saturday, April 13 to 18, at the Clinton Public Library located at 306 Eighth Ave. South.
Monthly Movie Musical. On April 16 at 2 p.m., visit the library for our Monthly Movie Musical to enjoy the wonderful classic, “Singin’ in the Rain.” Silent film stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont make a rough transition to talkies. Lina’s voice doesn’t fit her image, so Monumental Pictures has contract player Kathy Selden overdub Lina’s voice. As Don and Kathy fall for each other, Lina tries to harm Kathy’s career. The movie will be shown on the second floor of the main library. Popcorn will be provided. Bring your own covered drink.
Bingo @ the Library! On Thursday, April 23, on the second floor of the library, join us for an afternoon of bingo fun from 2 to 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded and coffee and cookies will be provided. The program is free. Call the library at 242-8441 to register.
Genealogy Day at Lyons - Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join Root Cellar staff and folks from the local genealogy community for a chance to exchange ideas, learn tricks of the trade, and discuss your projects. The cost is $5 for lunch, which includes 50 free black-and-white copies per attendee. The program is open to the public. 2015 Gateway History Conference - Where the Lincoln Road Meets the Mississippi: A Conference on Industry, Commerce, and Community in the Iowa-Illinois Gateway Area, 1835-Present. On Saturday, April 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., join the Sawmill Museum, Windmill Cultural Center and Clinton Public Library for the Gateway History Conference, featuring panels from various scholars, educators, and enthusiasts covering a range of regional history topics from 1835 to the present. This year’s keynote speaker is Clark Kidder, author of “Emily’s Story: The Brave Journey of an Orphan Train Rider,” who has co-produced and co-written “West By Orphan Train,” a new film based on his book. Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to screen “Country School: One Room, One Nation,” the Emmy-nominated documentary from Kelly and Tammy Rundle, with commentary from preservationist Caroline Bredekamp.
Kitchen Science for Grownups! Amaze your kids! Astound your Grandkids! All tricks are kid tested and mother approved! Children’s librarian Beth Mosher will demonstrate fascinating tricks with common objects found around the house on Thursday, April 30, at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the library.
Minecraft for kids! On Monday afternoons from 4 to 6 p.m., kids in grades 1 to 6 can come to the library to play Minecraft. Sign up at the children’s desk or call 243-5436 to register.
