An informational meeting for Citizens for Open Government scheduled for tonight at 6:30 p.m has been canceled. Marty Nitschke, chairman of the group, said the meeting will be rescheduled.
Citizens for Open Government formed as part of an effort to obtain records and notes compiled during a series of closed session City Council meetings during which a $4.5 million EMS billing settlement was discussed. The city has twice denied requests to view these records, citing Iowa open meetings law which allows for closed session records to remain sealed, as well as attorney/client privilege.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, as well as cooperating attorney Michael McCarthy of Davenport, have been working with the citizen's group to explore potential legal avenues to force the city to make the records public.
