A U.S. Marine who graduated from an eastern Iowa high school died after being injured in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan, his high school principal said Tuesday after speaking to a family member.
Zach Reiff, who graduated from Preston High School in 2007, died Monday night at a hospital in Germany, said Principal Dave Miller. Miller said Reiff’s brother, Kolby Reiff, told him Tuesday morning that his brother died.
Miller said the family was notified Friday that he had been wounded. He said Reiff’s parents, Marcia and Matt Reiff of Preston, flew to Germany on Saturday.
Miller said he had no other details. He did not know Reiff’s age or rank. The Department of Defense had not confirmed Reiff’s death on Tuesday.
Reiff was a wrestler and football player in high school and participated in plays and student government, Miller said
“He was a good kid,” Miller said.
Miller said Reiff had returned to Iowa in late September. His mother works for the school, and he stopped by and talked to some of the classes, Miller said.
“He was going for his second tour and I talked to him for a little bit. He was really proud to represent the United States and the military and what they were doing. That was his job and he wanted to do the best he could,” Miller said. Funeral arrangements were pending.
