CAMANCHE — A group of Camanche High School students is heading to state speech competition Saturday.

Fifty-four Camanche High School students will make the trip Saturday to Linn-Mar High School in Marion for the state speech competition.

The Camanche High School speech team earned Division I ratings on 11 out of 13 pieces performed at the district tournament. The entire large group speech team qualified for the state tournament.

Camanche High School Assistant Speech Coach Tori Dann said the students, in preparation for the conference, district and state competitions, practice 45 minutes before school and one hour after school. She said the focus after the district competition shifted to preparing them for the state competition.

“We want them to do better than before,” Dann said. “We want them to know that for some of them this could be their last performance. We’re just doing out best to prep them for whatever happens.”

The Iowa High School Athletic Association large group speech contest begins at 8 a.m. Saturday.
