Samantha Carroll will be a senior at Camanche High School and is working as an intern at the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre this summer. Find out more about her in this week’s edition of Meet Your Neighbor.
How has your internship at the Showboat gone so far?
It is honestly the most amazing experience I’ve ever done. We have theater in our school but here you learn so much, you do so many different things – lights, tech, backstage. We also have intern shows so you get to be on stage, too. You get to do a little bit of everything and it’s just amazing that you get to learn how to do it all.
What are some of your daily tasks as an intern?
We have to work backstage a lot so I’ve worked backstage for all the shows that have been on yet. We do boat cleaning so we make sure it is all clean for performances. We help set up the stage so we go to our tech assignments every Tuesday and Thursday for about two hours. I’m in set so I get to help build the set. I get to paint a lot. Some people do lights. It’s just a lot of backstage, behind-the-scenes stuff, which is really fun to learn.
Are you involved in theater at school? What has been your favorite performance you’ve done at school?
Yeah, definitely. I would have to say “Sound of Music.” I played a nun in that and it was a lot of fun. Right now we’re producing “The Addams Family” for next year. I will be playing one of the flapper ancestors.
Are you in any other extracurricular activities at school?
I do cheerleading so that’s a lot of fun. It adds a little bit more to theater, the dancing portion, at least it kind of helps me keep on beat.
What is your favorite musical of all time?
Of all time? That’s a hard one. I really love “Rent.” A lot of people say it’s so overplayed, which I understand that but I just have to say that’s probably my favorite. I just love the message behind it.
What are your plans after high school?
Well, I plan on finding another summer program. I don’t know if I am going to do the Showboat again next year. I hope I have time to do that. I’m hoping to either intern or get a professional part, if not I’m trying to find other theater things. After that I’m looking into colleges for performing arts.
