County seeks to buy vacant store for court system use

CLINTON — A vacant convenient store's location is creating a desire for Clinton County officials to purchase it.

The Clinton County Board of Supervisors will discuss an agreement to purchase the former Sunny's Mart, 630 N. Third St., because of its proximity to the Clinton County Courthouse and the new Clinton County law center, which are stationed across the street.

The board will consider approving the purchase at Monday's regular meeting.

According to the resolution, the purchase price is $135,000. The assessed value is listed at $198,784, according to Clinton County land records.

The property was last purchased in December 2016 for $140,000.

With the property previously being used as a gas station, it does create some caveats to the purchase. According to the agreement, the Supervisors will not purchase the property until the Iowa Department of Natural Resources produces a closing letter indicating no environmental hazards from removing the underground tanks.

According to the resolution, the board desires to enter into the agreement to meet the board's obligation to provide for the needs of the county's court and justice systems.
