Running with one substitute, the Clinton High School 1,600-meter relay unit still prevailed to earn the school’s only win en route to a fourth-place finish Friday at the Jesse Day Relays.

Christian Rowan, Tyler Thomas, Austin George and Jason Banker each circled the Brady Street Stadium track once to claim first place in 3 minutes, 28.12 seconds. The time was 2.37 seconds faster than runner-up Davenport West.

“Austin George ran for Skylar (Thomas) and ran well,” Clinton coach Tony Smith said. “He ran well in the medley, too.”

The 1,600 relay — the final event of meets — has been the school’s top event this spring and ranks seventh in the current qualifying for the Drake Relays, according to Smith.

The River Kings finished with 84.5 team points, 10 behind third-place Davenport Central. Smith said two missing River Kings — sprinters Deshond Robinson and Skylar Thomas were held out because of minor injuries — probably would have made up the 10-point difference. Clinton finished ahead of Central last week at the Ira Dunsworth meet.

Clinton’s depth was its strength again Friday night.

“The throwers got points, the jumpers got points, the hurdlers got points, the distance runners got points, the sprinters got points,” Smith said. “I think the only events we didn’t score in were the two-mile (run) and the 100, and Robinson usually scores (in the 100).

“Tre Weaver in the shot put has been real consistent, Cody Collender is jumping well and Tyler (Thomas) had a great run in the 200.”

In addition to the victory in the final event, the River Kings also had a pair of runners-up.

Emmanuel Marcos-Teles ran second to Bettendorf’s Matt Butler in the 1,600 meters. Butler won in 4:26.67, with Marcos-Teles coming in in 4:31.87. Cody Collender took second in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, 4.75 inches.

“Emmanuel will probably make Drake in the two-mile and is close in the mile,” Smith said.

Pleasant Valley won the team title with 142 points, while Bettendorf took second with 127.

Clinton returns to action Tuesday when it hosts the Gateway Classic. It is the final chance to qualify for the Drake Relays.
