By Rachael Keating

Eric Hanson is the new pastor for Faith Lutheran Church in Andover. Find out more about him in this week’s edition of Meet Your Neighbor.

What is your favorite thing about the communities of Andover and Clinton?

I think there’s a lot of opportunity in small communities and small towns for connections and relationship building and getting to know people on a deeper level. There’s a friendliness and welcome here that I’ve appreciated so far from the community.

How is it sharing the same calling as your wife, Pastor Carina Shiltz of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston?

Like anything it comes with challenges but it also comes with a lot of opportunities. We are supportive of one another, we can process things together and since we both are called to witness to the love of Jesus Christ we process through that together. We’ve talked about some ideas of getting our congregations and communities together to do some work for justice and reconciliation.

Who is the most influential person in your life and who do you go to for advice?

The most influential person to me is Jesus. As far as who I still go to for advice and other influential people I’ve had quite a few teachers and mentors over the years in many different areas of the world. I try to keep a wide pool in terms of circles I keep for influence and conversation partners. It’s important as a pastor to be up on different points of view, understand where different people are coming from and engage with a lot of different people living in different parts of the country that do different things for a living.

What is your favorite music?

I don’t really have a favorite genre. I like a lot of stuff. I like jazz, rock, punk, metal, country and folk, classical and world music like stuff from Latin America and different parts of Africa and India. On the way to work this morning I was listening to NPR.

How do you spend your free time?

I like to cook and play music, I play percussion. I also like to keep informed about the world and the community by watching the news, reading and talking with people.
