Are you looking for some fun-filled excitement for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning this summer? Well, I have just the solution for you and your family. The Clinton County Area Enviro Kids Summer program is a great adventure for children in grades third through fifth. Smaller children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult. Older children, parents and grandparents are always welcome as well.
There are eight events scheduled throughout the summer that focus on exploring, learning and just having fun with nature and our environment. All you have to do is register and show up; we do the rest. We are excited to showcase the following events:
n June 3 — Explore the great outdoors at the Izaak Walton League. Enjoy canoeing, fishing and a hayride on the prairie.
n June 10 — Find out what happens to all the trash that you throw away as we tour the Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency. Learn about the life cycle of a landfill and how many items are recycled.
n July 1 — Tour LyondellBasell to see how plastic is made, check out the lab, view the emergency vehicles, and participate in hands-on experiments.
n July 15 – Paper Pizzazz at the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center. Join in for the ultimate recycling — making paper by hand and creating with paper.
n July 29 — The Sawmill Museum is where local history comes to life. Explore the new exhibits and play in an 1888 lumber camp.
n Aug. 5 — Help paddle the 14 passenger Voyageur canoes. Also have fun with regular sized canoes, standup paddle boards, kayaks and row boats at the Mississippi River Eco Tourism Center.
n Aug. 19 — Flowers-Forest-Fauna Fun Day at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum. Enjoy a fun-filled nature scavenger hunt. Create an art piece from nature. A plant may just follow you home.
n Aug. 26 — Enjoy a baseball game with the Clinton LumberKings at the ballpark. Check-in starts at 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. the Enviro Kids get to go out on the baseball field for special recognition.
This will be the 13th year for the Enviro Kid’s program and we are still going strong. The program is made possible through all of the wonderful volunteers from the event sites listed above. There is still plenty of time to sign up for a fun-filled summer. Registration forms were distributed to all schools in Clinton County as well as Easton Valley, and the Fulton schools. Additional registration forms are available at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum, (in the outside mailbox), Children’s Discovery Center, and the Sawmill Museum.
The cost is a $5 one-time charge for all events, and includes an Enviro Kid’s T-shirt. Reminder post cards, with details and locations, will be sent out at the beginning of the week of each event. Call me at (563) 357-6932 if you have questions.
