• On average, tornadoes kill 60 people in the U.S. each year.

• Flash flooding is the No. 1 cause of death associated with thunderstorms, causing more than 140 fatalities in the U.S. each year.

• Most homes in the Midwest are built to a rating of 90-100 mph winds.

• Any location can be affected by flash flooding.

• Clinton County is one of only 15 counties in Iowa to receive the National Weather Service’s StormReady designation.

  • jpg Bride dies, groom injured in car crash 5 days before wedding

    A Georga college basketball coach was seriously injured and his fiancee killed when their car struck a concrete bridge support on Interstate-85 south of Atlanta Monday night while en route to Mobile, Ala., to get married Saturday.

    Georgia State Patrol investigators identified the driver of the car as John Redman, 23, assistant basketball coach at Dalton State College in northern Georgia. He suffered multple injuries to the head and upper body, they said. Redman is the son of former longtime LPGA golf player Susie Kirk.
