PHOENIX — Jeanne L. Berner, 77 of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on the evening of July 28th after a four-month battle with cancer, which she waged with courage and dignity.
She was the beloved wife since January 30, 1965 of Gerald L. Berner (Jerry) who was at her bedside at the time of her death. Jeanne was born in Boston, MA on February 14, 1936 to father Richard LaRue and mother Mary LaRue and moved early in her childhood to Detroit, MI with her mother. Both then relocated to Phoenix in 1943. She graduated from Phoenix West High School in 1953. Following high school, she worked for O’Neill letter shop and the Phoenix City court system until she retired in 1967 to concentrate on homemaking and supporting her husband in his career. Jeanne was preceded in death by her mother, Mary, in 1970. She is survived by her husband, brothers and sisters-in-law Glenn (Louise) Berner, Raymond (Maxine) Berner, Dorothy (Loren) Fox, Lola Berner, Arlene Berner, along with many nieces and nephews and many friends in both AZ and Iowa, all of whom will miss her greatly. She and her husband also spent many months at their home in Iowa during the past 14 years, being with family and friends, following his retirement. She was a beautiful person is so many ways.
A visitation will be held Friday, August 2nd from 6-8 pm at Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th St. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Saturday, August 3rd, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 330 W. Coral Gables. A service and burial will also be held at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, IA on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Family and friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m.Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. Burial will be at Pence Cemetery in Baldwin, Iowa. Donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
