---- — PORT BYRON, Ill. — Thomas R. Spier, 71, of Port Byron, died Sept. 27, 2013 after a 10-month battle against bladder cancer.
His granddaughter, Stella Ranee Salas was born Oct. 7th in San Antonio, TX. A memorial service to celebrate Tom’s life and the baptism of Stella will be held on Sat, Dec. 28th at 2 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, Princeton, IA. Visitation will be 12 to 1:30 at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at Salem Lutheran Cemetery. A celebration will follow at 4 pm at Boll’s Community Center, Princeton, IA. Please come and share a story about Tom - he loved nothing better than a good laugh. Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron is assisting with arrangements.
Tom was born March 21, 1942 to Richard and Bernice Spier and married Janis Nehring on June 29, 1974. He was very active at Zion and even sang in the choir, but only twice! Memorials may be made to Zion or the American Cancer Society.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, Port Byron; children (and spouses), Brent Spier, Seeleyville, Ind., Bryan (Sue) Spier, Rockford, Mich., Heather (Lupe) Salas, New Braunfels, Texas, Courtney Spier, Port Byron; siblings, Carole Shannon, Lancaster, Pa, Rick (Dana) Spier, Clinton, Iowa, Mike (Holly) Spier, Shaftsbury, Vt, and 9 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
