OTTUMWA — Meryl Dean Nichols, 81, of Ottumwa passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, IA.
A memorial service will be held at the Davis Street Christian Church in Ottumwa, IA on Wednesday, February 12 at 1:30. Reverend Jim Wakelin will officiate.
Meryl was born on February 10, 1932, the son of Dick and Elizabeth (Kesucker) Nichols in DeWitt, Illinois. He proudly served his country from 1952-1954, during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Germany. He met his wife, Alice Pitts, and married her in Coleta, Illinois on October 29, 1954. Meryl worked at International Paper in Clinton, Iowa from 1958 until he retired in 1998. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and bird watcher.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Konnie (Mark) Milder of Ottumwa; daughter, Kris Nichols of Grants Pass, Oregon; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Anderson of Chicago; his beloved Miss Molly and grand-dog, Padme.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.
