Eugene ‘Bud’ Witt

MAQUOKETA — Eugene “Bud” Witt, 83, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Saturday evening, January 4, 2014, at the Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa.
Bernard Eugene Witt was born on March 2, 1930 in Clinton County, Iowa, to Benhart and Kathryn (Hinrichs) Witt. He grew up in Delmar and graduated from Delmar High School in 1947. He married Dorla Harrington on September 3, 1950 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1994.
Bud was a farmer and a truck driver. At age 14, he drove a school bus before and after school. Upon graduation, he farmed in the Delmar area where he was named Outstanding Farmer for Clinton County in 1964. In 1965 the family moved to Andrew where he continued farming until 1970 when he began working for several implement dealers. He then drove truck for National By-Products in Clinton for 21 years, retiring in 1995.
While living in Delmar, Bud had been an active volunteer for the Delmar Fire Department and a Delmar 4-H leader. He continued volunteering for 4-H after moving to Andrew. He was an avid Iowa Hawks and Chicago Cubs fan, and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. His real passion however was bowling. He had served as a board member and past president and honorary member of the Maquoketa Bowling Association. He was inducted in the Maquoketa Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Those left to honor Bud’s memory include his children, Rick (Kathy) Witt of Peyton, CO, Dennis (Nancy) Witt of Clinton, IA, Kandy Carr of Maquoketa, IA, and Jeff Witt of Green Island, IA; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, his wife Dorla, a sister Elaine McDermott, and a grandchild Trish Witt.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Eugene “Bud” Witt memorial fund has been established.
