DEWITT — Donna A. McAleer, 79, a resident of DeWitt, died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Westwing Place Genesis Medical Center in DeWitt. She died following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian burial for Donna will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 417 – 6th Ave., DeWitt, Iowa. The Mass will be con-celebrated by Rev. Robert McAleer and Rev. Paul Connolly. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, DeWitt. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church. There will be additional visitation Saturday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Donna Ann Sterk was born January 4, 1935, in Brown Station, Sugar Creek, Iowa a daughter of, George John and Marie Bernadette (Skoff) Sterk. She graduated in 1952 from St. Joseph High School, DeWitt and then attended cosmetology school. Donna had worked as a cosmetologist for the former Hills Department Store.

She was united in marriage to Hugh Daniel McAleer on May 4, 1963 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They had been blessed with and celebrated fifty years of marriage prior to Hugh’s sudden passing on October 11, 2013.

Donna’s life was busy everyday as she enjoyed watching all her kids and grandkids coming and going from her home to the school and church, and her door was always open to visits from family and friends. She enjoyed her weekly outings with her sisters, Mary and Liz. She also had volunteered to serve funeral luncheons and helped deliver Meals on Wheels. But most importantly, she was proud of her family and adored each of her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family or St. Joseph Catholic Church or School.

Donna is survived by her children and their spouses: Jeanne (Todd) Hoffmann, Patrick (Sherry) McAleer, Dan (Raelynn) McAleer, all of DeWitt, Jayne (Jason) Riedesel, Grand Mound, Tim (Susie) McAleer, and Robert McAleer, all of DeWitt; grandchildren: Erin, Katelyn, Shawn Hoffmann, Ryan, Austin, Corey McAleer, Kayla, Kelly, Alex McAleer, Nicholas, Keenan, Levi, and Elizabeth Riedesel, Audrey and Dylan McAleer, Chase Kueter, and Ty and Shea McAleer; sisters, Elizabeth Burger, Davenport and Mary Dittmer, DeWitt, a brother, George (Pat) Sterk, Bettendorf, a sister-in-law Joanne (Jay Linnberg) McAleer; and brothers-in-law, Rev. Robert McAleer, Bettendorf and Tim (Jane) McAleer, Coralville, IA, and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hugh, and a grandson, Kyle McAleer. May they rest in peace.
