APPLE VALLEY, Minn. — Joel Patrick Stralow, 54, of Apple Valley, Minn., and formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, of natural causes.
Friends may visit the family from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, Iowa.
The funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Clinton, Iowa, where friends may visit the family from 12:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
Joel was born on Dec. 8, 1958, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Merle Stralow and Mary Joan (McDonnell) Stralow-Place. He resided there until he was three, when his family moved out to Arizona and then to California, where he spent the remainder of his childhood and teenage years.
He graduated from Indio High School, where he was an avid basketball player. After graduation, he attended Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore., and the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, where he continued his basketball career.
He was a long-time resident of the Twin Cities area, where he was employed in the Produce Sales/Northern Division for Supervalu Inc. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his daughter, Megan, and cheering on his favorite sports teams: Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Minnesota Vikings.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Megan (Stralow) and Matt Vorwald of Dyersville, Iowa; his father, Merle Stralow of McMinnville, Tenn.; his sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia S. (Stralow) and Ron Berghoefer of Santa Ynez, Calif., and his nephews, Corey (Kailene) Berghoefer of Atlanta, Ga., and their two sons Carter and Callen and Bryan (Gloria) Berghoefer of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and his former wife, Lori (Don) Hermsen-Apel of Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Joan (McDonnell) Stralow-Place; his stepfather, Forrest Place; his sister, Sandra K. (Stralow) Bailey; and his brother, Michael J. Stralow.
