CLINTON — Dr. John E. Ryan, retired dentist, 95, of Clinton, passed away surrounded by his loving family Sunday, September 15th at the Alverno.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 18th at First Congregational Church in Clinton. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17th at the Pape Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, with military rites by the AMVETS.

John Edward Ryan was born January 23, 1918 on a ranch near Sterling, Colorado to John E. Ryan and Elizabeth (Miller) Ryan. Raised primarily in Clinton, he was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. John earned a chemistry degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was a member of the Beta Beta Beta Honorary Biological Fraternity.

John graduated from the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry, and maintained a private practice of general dentistry in Clinton from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. He was a veteran of WWII, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps for 2 ½ years.

John married Thelma P. Lopez on March 11, 1945, in Barksdale Field Chapel, Shreveport, Louisiana.

John was a 50-plus year member of First Congregational Church, serving as an usher for over 40 years. He was a member of the Clinton District Dental Society and served on the Committee of Dental Ethics. John received a lifetime membership to the Iowa Dental Association, being recognized with a distinguished service award. John and his wife enjoyed Iowa Dental Conventions, Hawkeye football games, and ballroom dancing. He loved walking, golfing, reading, music, his home, yard, rose garden, and cars. He always looked forward to family vacations and get-togethers.

John will be dearly missed as a devoted husband of 68 years to his wife Thelma, a loving father to his “3 girls”; Pamela (David) Ehlers, Valerie Ryan Jungen, and Julie Ann (Dale) Walwer all of Clinton; “Grandad” to his six grandchildren: Spencer Ehlers of Alameda, CA; Elizabeth (Ehlers) Glade of Iowa Falls, IA; Lucas Richardson of Ames, IA; Brian Jungen of Coralville, IA; Jason Wenger of Cedar Rapids, IA and Beaux Walwer of Clinton, IA; and seven great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Margaret “Lorraine” Hoffman, and one great-granddaughter, Amelia Grace Wenger.
