CLINTON — Banks C. Doggett, Jr., 84 of Clinton, Iowa passed away Friday, September 27, 2013, at Mercy South, Clinton.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church. A luncheon in Webb Hall at the church will follow the service. Cremation rites were accorded and there will be no grave side at this time. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. Banks was born January 29, 1929 on Brown Summit, NC, the son of Banks C. and Elizabeth (Dobbs) Doggett, Sr. He was a graduate of Reidsville High School in North Carolina, received his BA in social science and political science from High Point University in High Point, NC and also received his Masters of Theology from Westminister Seminary in Maryland, now known as Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Banks married Phyllis Neal November 3, 1950 in Brown Summit, NC.

Banks was a former Methodist Minister, having served a church in Harford, Maryland before coming to Iowa to serve as a Methodist rural parish director with 11 churches in Appanoose County and its border from 1954-1960. He spent another year helping a small church in Brighton, Iowa build a new church building and then retired.

From there Banks went on to work at a farmer’s mutual coop and then served as the Deputy Secretary to the Secretary of Agriculture until 1966. Banks then went to work as the 4-H and Youth Leader for the Iowa Extension Service in the 8 counties of Northeast Iowa. Banks was instrumental in the development of early use of computers in the Extension program and worked from the state office for the last two years before retiring from the Iowa State Extension Service in 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Clinton, IA; children, Arica (David) Jansen of Clinton; Gordon Neal Doggett of Minneapolis, MN and Cherryl Lynn (Rollin) Nothwehr of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren and brother Wesley (Leonor) Doggett of Raleigh, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, John Benjamin Doggett.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Unionville United Methodist Church (Unionville, Iowa), Camp Courageous (Monticello, Iowa), or any other church or cause a person feels strongly about.
