NORTHBROOK, Ill. — James H. Grayes, 79, of Northbrook, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, October 24th at Glenbrook Hospital.
He was born in Clinton, Iowa, on January 3, 1934, to Katherine and Harry D. Grayes. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Lina Jo Grayes, his sons, Harry J. Grayes and James J. Grayes, his daughters Althea Grayes and Lenneth (Ron) Leyba, his brothers Theodore (Karin) and Alex (Desi) Grayes, and his nephew Alexander T. (Denise) Grayes. In addition, he leaves behind a host of friends.
James graduated from Clinton High School in 1951. He graduated from Clinton Community College in 1953. After serving 2 years in the Army during the Korean War, he graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958 with a BA in Education. He taught in suburban Clinton schools for a few years and obtained an MA from Truman State Unversity in Missouri in 1966.
Afterwards, he was in school administration in suburban Chicago until his retirement. A wake will be held on Saturday, October 26th, at N.H. Scott and Hanekamp Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will take place on Sunday, October 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. A local visitation will take place one hour prior to the graveside service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lemke Funeral Homes South Chapel (2610 manufacturing drive - west side of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with local arrangements.
