---- — Carol Jean Zaiser

Oct. 23, 1934 - June 21, 2013

CLINTON — Carol Jean Zaiser went to be with Jesus on June 21, 2013 after a number of difficult years with Parkinson’s Disease. Carol was born on October 23, 1934 in Clinton, IA the sixth child of Byron Lee Matthews and Hilda Ray Matthews. The Matthews lived in several different locations in the Clinton area during Carol’s childhood including a farm near DeWitt, IA.

Carol attended Clinton High School and was Editor-in-Chief of the “Clinton Bi-Weekly” her senior year. The organizing skills she learned there were utilized throughout her life as wife, mother, homemaker, teacher, and grandmother. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College in 1955 and began her career as a second grade teacher at Washington Elementary in Davenport, IA.

During the summer of 1957, Carol met Gary Zaiser, one of the new engineers working for Du Pont in Clinton. They were married on April 20, 1958 in the First Methodist Church. Soon after, Gary was called up for active duty in the US Air Force and stationed at Sembach Air Base in Germany. After about three months, Carol was able to join him. During their time in Germany, Carol did some substitute teaching at the Base and the couple was able to do some sightseeing in Europe. After nearly two years in Germany, Carol and Gary returned to the US with their first son, David. Gary retired from active duty and returned to work at Du Pont in Clinton where the family joined Trinity Lutheran Church. About one year later, Gary was transferred to Wilmington, DE with Du Pont and the family transferred to Concordia Lutheran Church. In Wilmington, they were blessed with a second son, Tom, and a daughter, Nancy. Here, Carol began her lifelong career as a homemaker setting an example of always seeing the best in others.

Carol, Gary and family joined Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newark, DE in January 1965 and were active members there for 45 years. Carol taught Sunday School for many years, was a teacher’s aide for eleven years in Our Redeemer Kindergarten and Pre-school, was Chairperson of the Altar Guild and leader of the group making sleeping bags for the homeless. Carol also enjoyed sewing (counted cross-stitch), playing bridge and watching all forms of sports. In December 2009 they moved to Maris Grove in Glen Mills, PA and transferred back to Concordia Lutheran Church in Wilmington.

Carol and Gary have been blessed with a wonderful family: David, Tom and Nancy, their spouses: Katherine Hober, Kelly Herron and David Cordrey; and six grandchildren: Adam, Hayden, Logan, Claire, Andrew and her namesake, Caroline Jean.

Left to cherish her memory include her husband of 55 years; children and grand children: a sister, Mary Davis of Clinton; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Billie and Harlan Geerdes of Hartley, IA; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3003 Silverside RD., Wilmington, DE 19810 on Wednesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. where friends may call at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to “Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research” Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, NY, NY 10163.
