John was born in McGlaughlin, SD on May 19, 1925, the youngest of the four sons of James and Florence (McDermott) Fullan. He attended St. Patrick’s parochial school and graduated from Delmar High School in 1942. John married Audrey Elleson in San Francisco, CA on January 20, 1951. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II, in December 1942, at the age of 17, following his three older brothers. He served in the South Pacific for three years from Tarawa to Iwo Jima and engaged in many amphibious operations.
He was honorably discharged in July 1946 and then was called back into service for two years on the Ptarmigan, a minesweeper sweeping the Northeast coast of Korea, from Wansan to Hungnam.
John worked for Standard Oil for 20 years, and then became an independent oil jobber, operating Fullan Oil Company until he sold and retired in 1984. During his retirement, John began studying his genealogy. He became known as “Iowa John” in genealogy circles, and was a great resource to anyone looking to find their ancestors.
