John A. Fullan

May 19, 1925 - Sept. 20, 2013

CLINTON — John A. Fullan, age 88, of Clinton, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013 at his home.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Jon DeMong, Matthew Fullan, Jesse Fullan, Aaron Fullan, Sean Fullan and Shanelle Jackson.

John was born in McGlaughlin, SD on May 19, 1925, the youngest of the four sons of James and Florence (McDermott) Fullan. He attended St. Patrick’s parochial school and graduated from Delmar High School in 1942. John married Audrey Elleson in San Francisco, CA on January 20, 1951. He graduated from Clinton Junior College in 1954.

John enlisted in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II, in December 1942, at the age of 17, following his three older brothers. He served in the South Pacific for three years from Tarawa to Iwo Jima and engaged in many amphibious operations.

He was honorably discharged in July 1946 and then was called back into service for two years on the Ptarmigan, a minesweeper sweeping the Northeast coast of Korea, from Wansan to Hungnam.

John worked for Standard Oil for 20 years, and then became an independent oil jobber, operating Fullan Oil Company until he sold and retired in 1984. During his retirement, John began studying his genealogy. He became known as “Iowa John” in genealogy circles, and was a great resource to anyone looking to find their ancestors.

John is survived by his wife, Audrey; children Kathy (Jim) DeMong, Mike (Char) Fullan, James (Debe) Fullan and Mary Jo Fullan all of Clinton and Patricia (Zim) Jackson of Glendale, AZ; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Jacqueline; three sisters and three brothers.
